What if what we thought was the "space" of space was actually the dark matter we speak of, clustered at different densities throughout the known universe?
Stephen Hawking talked about time and space consisting of waves, and a wave consists of energy being passed through matter - so why can't space be the dark matter we seek?
It's just a theory, but it's something to chew on.
